MARCH NURSES NOTES: Benefits of Breakfast March is National Nutrition Month and we are reminded once again about how important proper nutrition is for our children. A healthy breakfast is the first step to making healthy nutrition choices. Breakfast is a great way to get the body going for a busy school day!
Children who eat breakfast regularly tend to do better in school, are more likely to participate in physical activities, eat healthier overall and have fewer absences from school. Choosing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein while low in added sugar may boost children’s attention span, concentration, and memory which all contribute to successful learning. Skipping breakfast can make children feel tired, restless, or irritable. In the morning, their bodies need to refuel for the day ahead after going without food for 8 to 12 hours during sleep. Their mood and energy can drop by midmorning if they don't eat at least a small morning meal. So remember to fuel up each morning with a healthy breakfast!
